India is the second most populous country in the world with a population of over 1.3 billion people. One major problem and the hush-hush that isn’t spoken openly is the problem of infertility.

A report by Ernst and Young report in 2015 estimated that 27.5 million couples in India wanted to conceive but were unable to do so naturally.

Infertility isn’t a disease, but it’s a condition where the couple are not able to conceive despite having unprotected intercourse for atleast one year. There is a taboo that infertility is a female issue. A couple’s inability to conceive children can also stem from problems related to male reproductive system. Female infertility accounts for 30%-40% of infertility and males accounts for 30-40% of infertility cases and the percentage of male infertility has been growing over the years.

IVFICSI and IUI are the ways that can help you conceive a baby. Each fertility treatment is very different and we’re frequently asked by people which is the best treatment for them. Every couple’s fertility treatment journey is different and depending on your condition a certain fertility treatment is suggested to you.

ICSI: Intracytoplasmic Cell Injection is an advanced treatment of IVF and in this process a healthy cell is taken and injected directly into the egg for fertilization

IUI: Intrauterine Insemination is a process where your partner’s cell is injected into your uterus at the time of ovulation.

IVF: In Vitro Fertilization is a process that involves use of fertility drugs that will stimulate the ovaries to produce mature eggs and then it is retrieved later for further fertilization in the laboratory.

What is In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)?

In Vitro Fertilization is an assisted reproductive technique that is used for fertility treatment and helps one with the conception of a child. In this process eggs are collected from the ovaries and fertilized with the cell in a laboratory. Then the fertilized egg is allowed to grow in the incubator, in the embryology lab for some days before being transferred into a woman’s uterus thereby increasing the chance of getting pregnant. The complete process of fertilization takes a few hours to develop embryos and the embryos are grown in a lab for3 to 5 days(Blastocyst). Fertilized embryos are then transferred into the uterus through a simple procedure called Embryo transfer.

The IVF procedure involves five steps:

Stage 1: Stimulation of egg through hormones

The stimulation of ovaries is done through hormone therapy and a few drugs are prescribed to women to increase the production of eggs. This procedure is monitored by running a few blood tests and ultrasound of the ovaries to help you track the entire response.

Stage 2: Retrieving of the Egg

In this stage a minor surgical procedure is performed called “Follicular aspiration” under mild sedation. In this process the eggs are retrieved with help of a hollow needle which is attached to the ultrasound probe. After retrieving the eggs, the woman is under medication that helps to form a lining within the womb for embryo transfer.

Stage 3: Insemination

Your partner is asked to collect the cells and is put together with the best quality eggs. Then the eggs and cell are incubated in the laboratory.

Stage 4: Fertilizing the eggs

The retrieved eggs are fertilized by conventional insemination in culture containing dishes. The eggs are monitored regularly to confirm the fertilization.

Stage 5: Transfer of embryo into the uterus

Embryos are transferred in the uterus 3-5 days after egg retrieval and fertilization. Transfer of embryos is done by inserting a thin tube called a catheter that is inserted into the uterus. The woman will become pregnant when the embryo implants itself into the uterine wall and this complete process can take 15 days. A blood test will help you determine whether you’re pregnant.
